How do I know if something is copyrighted?

Answer

A work is copyrighted from the moment it is created and does not require registration with the Copyright Office. Please see the Public Domain tab on the Copyright Basics page for more specific information. Your academic work is also copyrighted and you own your work. If an instructor would like to use your work as a sample he/she needs your written permission to do so.
