How do I search for editorials or pro/con articles on a controversial topic?

Answer

When you're beginning research on an issue, it can be helpful to read background information and viewpoint essays.

Library Databases

These databases provide background information on various controversial issues and can help you narrow your focus on the topic you've chosen to research.

Opposing Viewpoints in Context contains articles with contrasting perspectives on issues such as gun control, genetic engineering, censorship, endangered species, etc.

CQ Researcher contains in-depth, single topic reports with extensive references on controversial issues.

Newspaper editorials

One way to find opinion pieces on controversial issues is to search for newspaper editorials.

You can do this on the open web, or you can search in Newspaper Source Plus database.

1. Type in terms related to your topic in the search box. (e.g. college tuition)

2. On the search homepage, under Document Type, select Editorial and then click Search.

Some additional search tips:

  • Try a search term that has a point of view embedded in it (e.g. "right to die” “pro-choice”)
  • Limit your search to editorials, opinion essays, or commentaries, from the Advanced Search page in some databases
  • Add a search term such as debate, controversy, pro, proponent, support, benefit, opponent, opposition, con, counter, ban, negative, ethical, ethics, moral, etc
