How do I know what a book's call number is?

Answer

Each physical book in the library has a unique call number, a combination of letters and numbers. A call number is like an address: it tells us where the book is located in the library.

Call numbers appear on the spines of physical books and in the library's catalog. Most often, you'll identify the call number for a book in the catalog and then use it to find the book on the shelf.

DMACC Libraries use the Library of Congress Classification System and this allows the books to be organized by subject area.

In the library catalog, you'll see if the book is available or checked out, which DMACC Library has the book, and its call number. Record the call number and use it to find a book on the shelf.

On the shelf, you'll see the call number on the spine of the book written from top-to-bottom or left-to-right.

Ask library staff if you need help searching the catalog or finding books in the library.
